Job Description
The Goethe-Institut Johannesburg is looking for a Caretaker/Handyman to work 20 hours a week at the Johannesburg office. This job is a part-time position for a 2-year contract. The salary will be based on the Goethe-Institut South Africa’s pay scale.
Key Responsibilities
Facility Management:

Inspect the building, grounds, and equipment every day.

Repair small problems or defects when needed.

Take care of hand tools and electrical tools, keeping them safe and organized.

Keep the storeroom neat and clean.
Coordination of External Service Providers:
-
Check the quality of work done by outside contractors.
-
Make sure contractors follow the maintenance schedule and remind them if needed.
Technical Support for Events and Exams:

Help set up and take down equipment for events and exams, including cleaning, setting up technology, and transporting items.

Make sure all the necessary equipment for events and exams is working properly.

Drive the company car if needed, for errands or to pick up guests.
Health and Safety:

Make sure the building follows health and safety rules.

Help train staff on health and safety protocols.

Ensure fire equipment and first aid kits are checked and ready.
General Support Duties:

Help with general tasks needed in the office or building.

Assist with cleaning when needed.

Drive the company car when required.
-
Help the operations officer with administrative tasks.

Substitute for the driver, caretaker, or operations officer when necessary.
Minimum Requirements:
-
Education or experience in general maintenance or a related field.
-
Health and Safety certificate (preferred, but not required).
-
Previous experience in facility management or a similar role.

Good communication and people skills.
-
Ability to take initiative and solve building problems.
-
Willingness to work on weekends if needed.
-
Ability to work overtime at short notice.

Ability to work independently with little supervision.
-
A valid code 10 driver’s license.
Additional Requirements:

No criminal record or pending cases.
-
South African work permit (if you are not from South Africa, you must have a valid work permit).
